Smelly Cat?

I have a kitten that is roughly 5 months old. The problem that I am having is that when he goes to the bathroom, it smells really bad and stinks up part of the house. Anyone have any ideas on how to stop this or make it so its not as bad?
Answers:
We use Fresh Step and I clean it out every other day, or right away if the poo is really smelly. He's not burying his poo properly, is the real problem and they don't learn how to do that so well until they are older, especially boy cats for some reason. So, if you are home when he makes his smelly poo, scoop it out or bury it for him. Or you can just put a cork in his butt.
what type of food are you feeding him? My cousin just had a kitten and the same thing. I think kittens are like babies their crap smells worse.
Well, poop being what it is, it's going to stink. But if it smells particularly bad, maybe check his diet by a veterinarian? Some foods (esp dairy) can make a puss toot often and strongly. Good luck!
Put baking soda into the litter box. That will kill the odor.
Feed him dry food.

Use clumpable litter and scoop daily.

Good luck. I had a cat that smelled bad.WHEEW! I put her outside.
What kind of litter do you use? You should use the hard-clumping kind, and then scoop it out daily (or even right after he goes). Also, they sell powders near the kitty litter section in most pet stores that help reduce the odor in combination with the litter. For example, Arm %26 Hammer makes a type that includes baking soda, to help reduce the smell.
Leave it outside where it belongs!
Don't give him milk. It tends to upset most cats stomachs causing very stinky poop.
It is all common with cats. You may want to clean out their cat box each single day and change their diet to a indoor formula ( if your kitty will be indoors) or check with your veterinarian.
Do you have a cover litter box that has a carbon pad on top of the lid? if you don't you may want to look into getting one.
There only 12.00 at your local Walmart
Buy some Arm and Hammer Cat box baking soda with the litter.
You will be surprise on how much it will reduce the odor
Hope this helps some
are you feeding him quality food? are you feeding him canned food. if corn is the first ingredient of dry food or something to do with corn it is bad, never feed your cat that crap. canned food will make your cat's bowel movements smell bad as well.
Change his food this is what make his poop smell so bad.
Feed it quality food, also have you had kitty checked for worms?? Sometimes the type of cat litter can make things worse too. Get yourself a littermaid for kitty, she is old enough, it will automatically run after kitty is out of it 15 minutes later. Use Tidy Cat scoopable, the new one that says," New,Tidy Lock"on the right side as you are looking at it. It don't have that harsh scent and the cat box don't give off that horribile order like it used to. Buy the mega, it is srtonger and runs better. Trust me, it will help you so much, you can reuse the trays just empty it every day or every other day since it is only one cat. Much better than a regular litterbox. Littermaid stands by their warrantee too, no, you won't have to save the reciept nor send the whole thing back if something goes wrong. just don't over fill it and you will be fine, fill way below the fill line. have your Kitty checked out and use good food for it. Canned and dry as well, and water, not milk.
It might depend on the food you are feeding him. I use to feed one of my cats Purina and it was so bad that it made HIS eyes water. I'm not kidding. No other brand of food did that.
You could also try a different type of litter.
I have a cat also and what I found that really works is arm %26 hammer litter box deoderizer , when the cat finishes smelling up the place I sprinkle some in the litter box and it takes the smell away on contact.
first thing walmart sells a cat box freshener (looks like a box of carpet sprinkles) that helps, if that don't work there is also a thing that is like a mesh bag with lava rocks in it, some how it absorbs the stink..also Dr forster's (I believe that's the name) is a pet supply company and that has different products for that..but you might also try changing their food they could have a food allergy .hence the excessive smell..my cats are sensitive to seafood.
As Phoebe would say,
"Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat, what are they feeding you?
Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat, it's not your fault!"
use baking soda
they have wipes you can use on cats to get rid of odor..kinda like baby wipes. He should be cleaning himself thou. You might want to call the vet and see why he wouldnt be. Could be sick.
could be a food issue. Try changing the food. Keep on a kitten food and gradually change the food. Get a good brand of food NOT wal-mart brand, dollar store brand etc. Iams, Eukanuba,Science diet are all GOOD quality food. If it continues try taking a sample of stool to your vet for a intestinal parasite check
