Hi there.Common odours that are effective deterrents for cats are:
Citronella works best for cats as well as citrus scents (primarily towards cats), cayenne pepper, coffee grounds, pipe tobacco, lavender oil, lemon grass oil, citronella oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, and mustard oil.
"Havahart's Cat Repellent" uses capsaicin pepper and oil of mustard as its active ingredients. It repels by both taste and odor, has a lemon scent.
Every animal responds differently to each of these. Some will not be phased by them and others will be quite revolting.
For training purposes they are applied on items that are to encourage avoidance behaviours and not for use with a squirt bottle as they could harm the eyes or respiratory system. Test each substance and observe to see which works as a deterrent so that accidental injestion does not occur as some could then be fatal.

I can easily keep stray cats out of my garden with a garden hose. One good dousing and then you will only have to go for the hose or pick it up and they will split.
Of course if they are night visitors you might not want to sit out there and wait for them in the dark.
Moth balls can be very toxic for cats and other wildlife and they are harmful to the environment in general.
Either a Citrus spray or lay down Orange/Lemon peel - they don't like that.
You can also buy Sonic deterrents to place in your garden.
They produce a sonic sound which irritates and annoys cats.
You obviously don't really want to discourage cats, because the answer would definitely be to get a Jack Russell.

First of all, don't use moth balls. If it is a vegetable garden your are not wanting to use a toxin. Moth balls are poison. Get a low powered bbgun and shoot the cat in the butt. After a couple of times they won't like your garden anymore. They associate your garden with a literal pain in the butt. lol It does work. Or, get a big dog and train him to stay out of the garden. Chow Chows are really good anti-cat dogs. I used to have one.
a cat is supposed to live inside in a couple of monthe it will die if u don't bring it in that's why if u go to the spca all the cats/kittens are ment to live inside
Mothballs works for discouraging cats from using your garden as a bathroom. It also works to keep them out of closets and places you don't want them in. Cayanne pepper also works in the garden. It is a vegetable and won't hurt the plants. But cats don't like it. But my husband had to run an electric line around the garden to keep the dog out. It is the same one used by farmers to keep the horses in the pen. It gives them a small shock and you unplug it but leave the line up and the dog remembers what it felt like and he won't go near the garden or in it again. I have used mothballs with my own cats for years. No toxic problems.
