i see them for sale at $20 per section but cannot afford it. where would i find the hooping needed? surely there is something in Lowe's or Home Depot one can use for the shaping. i've looked at all the tubes in the plumbing and A/C depts. but they are not large enough around. any help much appreciated.

I would try plain metal wire. As long as you cover the wire with a cloth or whatever material you are going to make the cover of tunnel.
The metal wire will hold, shape Just cover it up really well so that you cat doesn't get stuck or scratched by the wire.

If you have an old spring out laundry holder, u know the mesh ones that you fold into a circle, usually at Walgreen's, eckerds. my son took one of the metal pieces out and it's pretty sturdy.
