upper respiratory infection in kittens. What do vets perscribe anything ove rthe counter?

We took one tiny tiny kitten in and it has been showing positive results I am assuming from the food and higher temps in the house as it is getting ver chilly at night here in CT. However she still has puss on eyes and they other kittens outside I checked on today are getting worse. Two of the kittens were fine than all of a sudden they are getting these puss closed eyes. We would like to do something until we can get a vet to address this problem. Yesterday someone said go have them put down which I am against. As a person I would rather be sick living than sick dead so any suggestions? Also if they use an antibiotic can you tell me which ones and mg per lb?

I do have some around the house which I used before but have lost the sheet of lb/mg ratio.

Cheers

they most likely will give u clyndimiacin (i know thats spelled wrong). its an antibiotic thats used for a variety of things. unfortunatly, u cant get it OTC. its not terribly expensive though, i paid 45 for the visit and med.
They are going to give Clindimycin for a URI and you can't get it over the counter.
I think you can only get an antibotic from the vet
the vet didn't perscribe you any antibiotics? you should take them back or find another vet. it also sounds like feline herpes. you can discuss that with your vet though a lot of vets don't know a lot about it.
URI needs to be treated with ORAL ANTIBIOTICS and maybe some antibiotic eye ointment. If you are not going to treat them, then do put them to sleep. Kittens dying from URI is sad. The nose gets so stuffed up that they cannot eat and they starve and dehydrate. It is awful to watch. Unless they are FeLV positive and that is contributing to making them sick, they are treatable with the proper medication. Usually the vet gives Clavamox, at a dose of .1ml per pound. It can not be gotten over the counter and needs a vet to give it to you.
If you are not going to treat them properly..take them to a shelter or euthanize them!! Sick and dying is not better than alive. They die a horrid death.

Kitten need to liquid since the pills are too hard to dose for the weight of the kittens. If you have old oral antibiotics, they are VERY LIKELY NO GOOD!! Either do not be cheap and get them treated properly, or take them someplace that can!!

It is true this is frequently caused by a virus, however it turn bacterial FAST! THAT is where antibiotics come in. 90 percent of the kittens I treat DAILY recover quickly on oral antibiotics. I am a vet tech at a cat shelter and most all the kittens that come in (about 20 per week) have a URI and respond very well to medication. The ones that do not usually hae a complication like FeLV or FIP. The kittens that do not respond to antibiotics, get worse, or get a URI again right after the meds are stopped need to be evaluated for these conditions. Treating a kitten with clinical FeLV is a losing battle and they are better off euthanized. So, if you have cats, be sure to kepp them FAR from these kittens since they can transmit FeLV to your cats, not to mention the URI and parasites.
I hate to euthanize kittens as much as anybody, but some are beyond help and it is torture to keep a terminal kitten alive to suffer on its own.
You cannot give antibiotic to the kittens. As torbay said stuff you have hanging around the house (it shouldn't be, when antibiotics are prescribed for humans you are supposed to take the FULL dosage prescribed so there is none "left over".

The problem with the kittens is a viral infection and anitbiotics won't help with it. What will help is getting the kittens inside and on a good, regular diet - a quality brand of canned cat food. And starting them on their kitten shots to prevent possible infection with panleucopenia - frequently fatal to young kittens.

I would not label you "cheap" however. Doing this is taking on a great responsibility, both financial and time-consuming. Your heart is in the right place and I applaud your concerns and desire to help.

And taking them out of a dangerous environment and "treating" them with good food, love and shelter is the best thing you can do for them.
you cant give kittens or cats people medication please dont please just take them to the vet or to the humane society so that they can be cared for they definately need vet care
