Ticks can cause many different diseases and conditions. The one condition that most people don't know as much about is often refered to by vets as "tick poisoning". This is caused when a large number of ticks attach themselves to the host animal. This can sometimes happen without the pet owner even being aware if the ticks happen to be baby seed ticks or if the animal has a long dense coat of fur. When ticks feed on a host animal, they secrete into the bloodstream a chemical that prevents the blood from clotting, that allows the tick the ability to feed at one bite site for as long as it wants. The problem occurs when there are so many ticks that the chemical they secrete builds up in the host animal's bloodstream and the host's blood begins to thin. This thinning of the blood causes a lack of red blood cells which is what carries oxygen throughout the body. The host begins to show signs of this by becoming lethargic. As the condition progresses, you'll notice your pet's tongue or gums being very pale. That is a sure sign that the animal needs emergency care. It is possible for healthy young animals to die in as short as 24 hours following exposure to such an infestation of ticks. You were extremely lucky to have saved your pet's life. If you ever notice an infestation of ticks again and your pet is not yet showing signs of lethargy, use a topical flea and tick killer, like Frontline, to quickly kill the ticks. Good luck!!
yes ticks can be fatal
it's nice to hear some people care about their animals
can you get a flea %26 tick treatment for cats??
you can with dogs!!
Yes fleas and ticks can be fatal. They can suck so much blood your cat could end up having a blood transfusion and if your can is usually fluffy it can be hard to tell. Just really pay attention to how they are acting.
Tcks can be fatal in dogs or cats. Of course it all depends on the age, health, and number of ticks. Ticks are also able to carry diseases. You did the right thing!
I am curious to know exactly what this dread tick disease is. Both my cats and I have had multiple tick bites over the years without contracting it. Of course one tries to avoid the nasty little suckers but ticks happen LOL, especially in the midwest.
Oh, yes, there are tick treatments but not always 100% effective.
yes ticks can be fatal IN any animal! they wear down the immune system by making them anemic and carry tons of diseases!!
yes it is F-A-T-A-L. even shorthaired breeds are affected by it.
