Spraying cat?

My cat sprays all over the place. He is about 1 year old and fixed. First question is how do I get rid of the stains on the walls, and second question is how do i train him to stop?
Answers:
Merrik pretty much covered everything. I just want too elaborate on a couple of things about boy kitty buddy behavior.

First: Dun freak! He is most likely not sick. He's just a boy kitty buddy. It is part of their make up too behave like this. It's a big down side but their is some hope.

As stated before he's just marking his turf. He is essentially labling what is his. And in his mind that is infact everything he doesn't have too fight another cat for. The spraying . well. it's a tag. He is telling the rest of the cat world who he is and how fit he is. Cat's have an odd view of the world due too their evolution. They (were) are a common pray item for a lot of other larger preditor species where kanids aren't. That shapes their out look in that every moving thing is either food, cat, or not-cat.

With me so far?

So. don't be offended by kitty buddy's behavior. The message he is leaving every where he goes isn't intended for you.

On too the "what do I DO about this" part of the question. If he's alloud access too the out doors just put him out when ever his backing alarm sounds. If he's strutting about with his tail high in the air and acting like he's about tag out your place scoop him up and chuck him out doors. Let him mark that space. This is the arrangement I have with one of my cat's works pretty well. *shrugs*

If that isn't an opption for you then you are going too have too move your self from the "not-cat" list too the "cat" list. He isn't likely too pick a fight with a cat as big as your self. When ever he get's too poking his but in the air you charg at him and make a big deal. And then you go back and mark what ever he was going too mark. I'll explain exactly what that means in a bit. It doesn't involve urinating on your own things. First I'm going too cover "big deal".

Wander over too Bunnings and pick up a spray bottle. The best kind are the ones you can pump up with air so you get a constant stream come out of them. Next. one part vinigar too ten parts water in the bottle. Kitty buddy goes too mark give him a big old squirt of the stuff and make a bunch of angry noise and chase him a bit. Let the ordeal last for at least 10 seconds before you let him off the hook. Remember. lots of noise and lots of the vinigar solution. The down side too this is he might not be as freindly with you afterwards. What with you bing all squirty and noisy and such. But. relationships with cats are always wierd.

Now for the marking bit. There are loads and loads and loads of shops that sell essential oils and what have you. The goal here is too find a strong smelling one that you don't wear and don't have in the house on a common basis. Their are heaps of scents too choose from. Sandlewood. um. eucaliptis. HEAPS I TELLS YA! HEAPS! Find one that doesn't make you overtly angry but isn't already in your house. Now this part is KEY!

You have less than twenty seconds too go back too where he was or did mark and then mark over the top of his scent. A cotton ball. your chosen scent. put a fork in it because it's done.

Now. This is going too take TIME! Cat's develope behavior much slower than other mammal speiceis because they have a lot more preprogramed behavior. Dogs develope behaviors pretty damn quick because they are designed too cope with an ever changing pack enviornment. Cats don't have that issue. Thus the "stubborn" lable. You should see improvement inside of 2 weeks with this.

If you need any follow up info on this go ahead and email me.

PEACE OUT!
iNSTEAD OF ANSWERiNG THiS QUESTiON i HAVE A QUESTiON OF MY OWN.. WHAT THE HELL iS SPRAYiNG??
U SHOULD TAKE UR CAT 2 PETCO OR ANY ANIMAL PLACE AND ASK LIKE PETCO OR THE OTHER STORES
dunno
Hi there.sometimes when cats are spraying/urinating there's a possibility they may have developed an infection of the bladder. Consider a visit to the vet which can help diagnose and treat.

Since you reside here in Seattle here are two vet clinics that specialize in feline-only medical care:

For urine odours consider using Nature's Miracle which is found worldwide in any pet store. It's an enzymatic neutralizer and works by soaking the affected areas with the solution to air dry. Repeated applications may be necessary for heavily soiled areas.

Well, your cat is spraying because he is marking his territory. And weather he's neutered or not, he'll still do it reguardless. But it does become a problem when he's doing it all over your house.

One thing to try on your walls is called Pet Stain and Odor Remover which you can find in the pet section in Walmart, or at just about any pet store. Another good thing to use would be bleach, since that will not only get the stains out, but it will make the place smell very bad, and your cat wont want to urinate there.

Another thing to think about is your litter box. Cats are very picky when it comes to where they go to the bathroom, and anything from the brand of cat litter used, to the box being dirty can make them not want to use it.

First off, make sure your litter is clean, and if it has been a while since you last did a complete change of the litter, try doing that. If he's still spraying everywhere, maybe it has something to do with the brand of litter that you're using.

I know that personally, my two cats HATE the clumping brands of cat litter, but on the other hand, they have no problems with the Fresh Step Clay Crystals.

Cats don't like litters that are heavly scented, so try to stick to a cat litter like regular old clay or Arm and Hammer brand that doesn't have a very strong smell.

Try these tips, and if nothing seems to work, then your cat is basically just doing what he feels he needs to do to make sure that the world knows that your home is his home, and really all you can do after that is keep cleaning up after him.
Get him checked at the vet for any infections so illness can be ruled out.
If he has only "just" started, has something happened within the household to upset him - a new animal, new people who may be hassling him.
If he has always sprayed, even before he was neutered, then it will be hard to break because it has no become a habit.

To clean the walls and get rid of the stink, good old white vinegar works a treat. It leaves no harmful residue
Unfortunatly once they start they don't stop .In our family we have over 20 cats betwwen us my aunt also rescues them. When we have a cat that sprays in our home they never stop so what we do is give it to another family member and they usually don't do it in the next home and some just don't change. They especially male like to mark there territory and they will keep doing it in the same spot .There r all kinds of cleaners and the one with an orange smell can sometimes help cleaning up the urine and taking the smell away.A lot of times when you get them fixed after they have had there first heat can cause them to spray.
