a cat has been pissing on my doorstep for the last month or so, every couple of days. this morning, the piss had leaked thru the gap at the bottom of my front door. its just gross, and i was told that if i shot the cat i'd be in trouble, and my only option is to buy some dumb- repellent thing that is unlikely to work. what do nice people like me do in a situation like this? i really want to shoot it..but like i say, i'm nice.

You can try pepper, vinegar, onions. Cats don't like any of these smells. Geraniums are good aswell.
lay in wait and use a bucket of water
Borrow someones ferocious dog for a few days and scare it away. Or call animal control and they will come and get the cat. Try not to hurt it though.
Have you tried a dumb repellent thing ? if not how do you know its not gonna work ?

catch it at your door and pick it up and take it to the pound and tell them you found it in your yard and its not yours. may seem cruel but that would drive me nuts too.
an eletric fence works well
use a live trap with tuna . then take him to an animal shelter . you can get the trap an a feed store
call the animal control (not sure if they care) or get a pitbull
Go clean your doorstep with soap and bleach because the cat has already associated that place to pissing because of the smell. You may try to splash the cat a bucket of water whenever it comes to pee until it is trained not to do so.
Check with a local vet before doing anything. They can usually help you.
i was told when we had this problem believe it or not put pepper down all over your doorstep and well believe it or not cats dont like pepper it keeps them away give it a try and see.
Cats hate the smell of citrus so lay some orange, lemon and lime peelings by the door and this should keep it away. There is also a plant called 'Scaredy Cat' (not sure of its real plant name) but this is effective too. (i have it in my garden borders and my cat wont go near it)
Or hang an old CD on string by the door as it distorts its reflection and scares it away!
Try to find out who's cat it is and ask them to keep it inside. I am curious why it has picked out your door. You don't have a cat? This behavior is associated with Dominance (I'm a bigger and better cat than the one who lives here) or Love. (come out and play sweetheart)
OK you don't care why you just want it stopped. I'm guessing this is an unentered male. Call the Humane Society and ask for a humane trap. Trap Stinky. Take him to Humane Society and they will fix him and find him a home, (it is to be hoped,) far away from you.
I like frandonn's Idea, but failing that put tin-foil down. The cats dont like the noise it makes when they pee on it and it scares them off. You wont need it down for long. My auntie used this when her cats started pi$$ing behind the TV. After a few days they stopped. Good luck
BTW, if you try both ideas and it still persists, shoot it! I thought cats were still classed as vermin anyway, so I dont think you'll be in trouble, and it's not like you didnt give it a chance!! lol.

Citronella works best for cats as well as citrus scents such as orange or lemon (primarily towards cats), cayenne pepper, coffee grounds, pipe tobacco, lavender oil, lemon grass oil, citronella oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, and mustard oil.
"Havahart's Cat Repellent" uses capsaicin pepper and oil of mustard as its active ingredients. It repels by both taste and odor, has a lemon scent.
Every animal responds differently to each of these. Some will not be phased by them and others will be quite revolting.
For training purposes they are applied on items that are to encourage avoidance behaviours and not for use with a squirt bottle as they could harm the eyes or respiratory system. Test each substance and observe to see which works as a deterrent so that accidental injestion does not occur as some could then be fatal.
Coleus plants can be effective, but every cat responds differently so it is uncertain without experimenting.
To remove the urine odours consider using Nature's Miracle found worldwide in any pet store. It's an enzymatic neutralizer that works by soaking the affected areas thoroughly then allowing to air dry. Repeated applications may be necessary depending on how heavily soiled the area is. I like the dog idea ,that will definitely work . My neighbors dog kills cats just for fun ,I know it's sad but most dogs hate cats .
you can buy a spray from pet shop that deters them. if you're in uk its definitely available in pets at home and home bargains
The best way to deter a determined cat is to do the following:
1. wash the area thoroughly with a non bleach based cleaner so that the cat can't smell his urine there any more.
2. wait in until the cat turns up and as soon as he approaches your door, throw a bucket of luke warm water at him.
This is not cruel, it is going to save him from being shot.
Do this a few mornings in a row until he doesn't turn up - although I suspect that once will be enough. Cats aren't stupid!
my boyfriends neighbour has got one of those sensor thingies and they do really work.. they are really good.
hi there lil miss stupid. For a start you couldn't shoot it for several reasons. Firstly, you aren't allowed to shoot domestic pets, and secondly, in the UK you won't be allowed a gun and thirdly, you wouldn't be allowed to shoot near dwellings even if you DID have a gun.
The short answer is wash the area with a solution of biological washing powder and water to neutralise the smell. They get yourself a 拢1.50 bottle of olbas oil from the supermarket (find it near the cold remedies) and sprinkle lots of it on the area. Cats hate the smell of it.
If you know who the cat's owner is, have a word with them about neutering their pet.
Hi - cats dont like pepper so try bunging a load of that along your door step, see if that helps?
Or citrus is something else theyre not too keen on.
Or you can buy stuff from pet shops too thats granuals, about 拢3 a pot, sprinkle that where you dont want cats to go.

i heard from my friend (who has cats) that they dont like orange peel..
she used this to stop them from using part of her garden as a loo. it worked.
