Territorial cat!- Why does a cat try to go after anyone touching his litter box?

There is nothing wrong with him, I believe he is just very territorial. Would having him neutered help? Does it matter if 6yrs old? Any suggestions from anyone whose experienced anyhting like this would be greatly appreciated. PLEASE, NO RUDE ANSWERS!!

Weird! I've never heard of anything like this.

I agree that putting him in another room while you clean the litter box is likely the easiest solution. Neutering is a good idea, but will not help with this problem.

You can work on changing his behavior by counter-conditioning him. When he is near the litter pan (but not in the midst of using it), walk by from several feet away and drop some treats or catnip. Do this until he shows no signs of getting concerned that you are there. Then repeat, but move a few inches closer to the pan. Continue in this manner until you can stand right next to the box.

Next, crouch down a few inches and drop treats. Same idea as above; when he is comfortable at one level, proceed to the next. In this case, you would crouch down a bit more at each stage. Finally, reach toward the litter pan and give treats, then touch the pan and give treats, and finally clean the pan and give treats.

Yes, a long and drawn out process, but it's the only way to teach him to not freak out when you touch the pan.

I have a cat myself, and I know how territorial they can be. Yes you can get him neutered he is still young enough to be able to handle it. though I am not to sure how much it would help. But it may be you might just have to lock him in a room when you clean his litter pan to keep him from getting to upset and from you getting to upset. Be happy it is only his litter box, I knew a cat that would hiss and claw at anyone that came into the house alone that was not her family!!
cats are very hygienic, he doesn't like you disturbing the poo-poo.
My kitten does it too, and continues, even after he is fixed. We change the litter box every day. I think it's partly territoriality and partially curiosity. Or maybe he's trying to show you he appreciates it when you change his litter. Most likely he is marking it with his scent though. It don't think it's a problem. Getting him fixed is a good idea if he goes outside.
Having him neutered will help ALOT. Though sometimes it might still happen occasionally, especially if there is a new animal in the house. I have a neutered cat, and he is very territorial and thinks he is very tough, but he has only sprayed when we introduced him to our dog. Never again since.
