we recently moved from chicago to arizona and so the climate is very dry. my older cats hair(she i s long haired) is covered in static electricity. when you pet and brush her you get shocked. how do i get rid of static cling in a cat?

try rubbing a dryer sheet on her, otherwise, get a hairbrush that is ionized. That will neutralize the negative charge- static cling.
I agree with the dryer sheet, it works on our hair too if you put in in your pillow case when you sleep at night.
get a humidifier.
put her in the clothing dryer with a lot of bounce sheets.
I agree with a dryer sheet. Jus pet her with it a few times, and she should be static-free for the rest of the day. If she sneezes alot, try a different brand. And imagine how she feels, shocking you! I bet she hurts and feels guilty, too. Dryer sheet should definantly work.
The dryer sheet is a great idea, ONLY if you are not allergic to it!! They can give some people severe hives, so use it sparingly until you're sure. If you already use one, then don't worry. Just a note of caution for those who haven't.
A clothes dryer cloth slightley used, so the purfume of the cloth doesn't stick so much to them. It works, Ive tried it.
