stray cat that sits by my back porch ??

there is this stray cat that sits by my back porch
he is EXTREMELY sweet and affectionate
i have 5 other cats however, so i cant let him inside
and i have to wash my hand throughly after petting him.
i think he was someones domestic cat and they abandoned him
he waits by my back door, and i want to keep him,
however 5 cats is already way too much and i dont want to bring him to a pound because he will just be put to sleep
what should i do?

It is sad when people abandon their pets, it's just wrong. In your case, I'd guess you are right. Affection is not found in stray/feral cats. If you *did* want to take in the stray, you could first take the cat to the vet to have a check up. Next you would need to introduce the new cat properly into the home. This is done by keeping the new cat seperate and gradually letting the scents mingle. There more, but only if you are interested in that course. You have 5 already, so would a 6th be that much more? ;)

The next best way might be a good vet that can recommend a no-kill shelter. If you really care, you might even try to fin a home by posting on craigslist.org
the next time you see a mail box with balloons on it [for a birthday party] drop it off with a ribbon around it's neck.
Maybe you could find a no-kill shelter to take him to. Your vet might be able to recommend a reputable one.
Post found posters in the immediate area, and try to find a couple of reliable rescue shelters. Petsmart, and Petco, both sponser a no-kill shelter.
Try and adopt the sixth cat since you already have five. Mew !
whats wrong with a stray cat u won't have mice outside so feed it a leave it alone or just let it hang around
Do you let your cats go out?
They will eventually become friends with the outside cat.
If you live in the north, please get that cat inside or to a shelter before winter comes.
Check with your Humane Society. If he is young and family friendly they may put some effort into finding him a home. Some people don't want kitttens because of all the nonsense they can cause. A housebroken adult might find a home fast. Call and see what they give his chances.
I hate to tell you this, but it's a fact of life that we do not choose our cats - THEY choose US. Congratulations, you've been chosen. Now, take him to the vet and have him checked out. If he's healthy, take him home and introduce him to the rest of your crew. Give him a name. Feed him.

THEN draw the line, because six cats is enough!
Take the cat to the vets, get it's health checked out and any vaccinations that it may need. Then give it a home! One more won't make that much difference to you. You're obviously a cat lover and you'll feel guilty if you take it to a pound. It's chosen you for a reason - other than that a trusty friend may come to the rescue, you don't know if you don't ask them.
good answers--nothing to add other than you are a compassionate person!! I understand there has to be a line in the sand as to how many cats is too many.

good luck, he's lucky to have wandered to your house.
Check in your local paper for missing cat notices and also see if you can place one in the paper to say you have found it - someone may be looking for it
feed him and stuff like that like you do with other cats and only let inside when you go to bed leave the house and during the winter
well, i think that u can first take it to the vet and check if it has any diseases. (just in case) after that you can keep it or give it to a reliable friend you know that would take good care of it.
Are you saying that you cannot afford to feed this cat or have a vet check for him? Then I think you must investigate places where he might be taken with a possibility of adoption to give him the best life.

I have a friend who had eight cats in her rather small house and she set up a little house for an outside cat whom she loved dearly. Many people do this. I would think a dog-loo would be perfect in a protected place with straw for insultation on the bottom and soft towels for bedding.

They even have cat bed pads that can be heated in the microwave and retain good heating for more than ten hours.

I agree that this cat has choosen you to be his care-giver and I hope that you can swing it financially.
Hi there.if you would like to find a home for this little kitty, consider placing an ad in Craigslist--it's free to use and list ads. http://www.craigslist.org . Choose your state, then city. Next look for the Community section and the subsection Pets to post your ad. Be sure to request a small adoption fee ($15-30) to minimize the risk of those who want a free cat to use for research, torment or abuse. Consider asking prospective adopters that you'd like to do a home inspection for a few months so you know the kitty hasn't been given away to someone else for the same bad reasons. Perhaps someone would like a barn cat who doesn't mind living outdoors so he can work for them chasing mice/rats and still have the comfort of living in a warm barn with food and love too.
take him to the vet
Sounds like you have been adopted. May as well accept your fate, clean him up and vet check him before introducing your current 5 to their new brother! With luck you may find someone that will want to take him off your hands. At least he will be safer, happier and gain some more social skills to make finding him a new home easier for both of you.
Check w the vet and the local humane shelter about adoption options to other folks.
